We don't really 'get' scramblers, but these definitely seem to be the flavour of the season. For 2016, BMW are getting on the scrambler bandwagon with the R nineT Scrambler, which gets rubber boots on the front fork, a raised exhaust and Metzeler Karoo off-road tyres. It still has the regular R nineT's air/oil-cooled 1170cc boxer-twin (which produces 110bhp and 116Nm of torque), but with new fuel-injection mapping and Euro4 compliance.
The BMW R nineT Scrambler also gets a 19-inch front wheel (wire-spoked wheels are optional), and revised suspension geometry that's been optimised for light off-road use and for bombing along on winding country roads. Tyres are 120/70 at the front and 170/60 at the rear, and the Metzeler Karoos' tread pattern is suitable for off-road use, without being unusable on the street. The Scrambler has a relaxed, upright seating position, higher handlebars (compared to the regular R nineT), reduced seat upholstery and rider footrests that are positioned lower and further to the rear.
Interesting details on the R nineT Scrambler include the use of forged aluminium parts with glass-bead blasted, clear anodised surface, tapered and stitched two-person seat in patinised brown leather look, raised exhaust fitted close to the body with twin silencers. BMW will also, of course, offer a full range of accessories for the Scrambler, which hipsters bearded young gentlemen will buy in droves. Good for them. We'd just take an HP4, thanks very much…
