Cruising to Chopperfest

Chopperfest is a motorcycle art and culture festival that has been paying homage to David Mann and his artwork for 12 years now. It is one of the premier motorcycle shows in Southern California, and is always a great spot to see some rolling artwork and pieces of motorcycle history.

The show is somewhat divided these days, however. Not that the bikes are split up or there is a mods vs. rockers style rivalry or anything like that, but there seem to be two schools of thought. The first wants to build bike exactly like they were in the sixties and seventies, period correct, either with patina or perfect paint, but done up with all original vintage parts sourced from the far edges of the earth for big money, personal favors (wink wink) or trade for other old parts. The other is out to update their bikes. To bring these pieces of motorcycling history into the modern era with proper performance-oriented components and changing up the lines to fit other types of riding.

Both styles of builder bring incredible talent and skill to the table, and they’ve all put a ton of time and work into their bikes, we just tend to prefer the ones that go a little ways outside the box. A perfectly period correct survivor from the 60s that has never even been kicked over is a beautiful piece of artwork, but if it were me… I’d trade it in for a custom I could ride the wheels off of.

Rooke Customs' Scrambler 450

I love an unclassifiable motorcycle. One that’s not a chopper or a bobber, definitely not a cafe, but different from any scrambler we’ve seen. It’s between the lines of moto customization that this little jackrabbit lies. A custom creation possible nowhere other than the mind and garage of Jesse Rooke.

Rooke’s shop looks like every adrenaline junky’s dream. A custom Polaris RZR perched high above the entry, choppers in one corner, raced-out Sportsters in another, and by the door sat a row of dirt bikes with this little gem tucked in the lineup. This crazy little bobber-scrambler-brat with a CRF 450 engine and a Unicam head. I have always had a soft spot for thumpers (single cylinder engines) as they tend to be incredibly lightweight and very torque-rich, and this beast just sang to me.

Kickstart only and weighing in under 300 pounds, it’s hard not to spin some tire or pick up the front end while taking off. This bike doesn’t have the highest top speed, but it takes off like a rocket and stops on a dime. The hand-done paint and dirt bike/ rugged components make you want to take this thing out and beat the crap out of it. It just looks like it would handle whatever you can throw it’s way without breaking a sweat, and it can.

The idea with this bike is that Jesse can sell the frame as a sort of kit, he called it a father-son project. If the dad has an old dirt bike (or a newer one), he could call up Rooke, get the frame and the wheels and some other components, mount the dirt bike engine in it, have the wheels put on the stock hubs, transfer over electrical and suspension components and bada-bing! You’ve got yourself an incredible looking and riding little jammer. Hopefully he brings this idea to fruition, as we love the concept and we love the bike!

Bikes of Born Free 7

Born Free is one of, if not THE biggest chopper and custom show in the US. Due to it’s presence in the heart of the lovely OC, it has earned such endearing nicknames as “Bikechella,” and “Cochopper”. Despite the incredible amount of hip kids and “in the know,” grown ups that show up for the chopper mall and try to get there pictures taken for the new Levi’s mood board: this remains an incredible show that brings out the buddies and bikes from all over that I only get to see once a year. Every year you see the best that the chopper world and custom builders have to offer. This is a show that is unique to Southern California and has been growing at an incredible rate. You’ll see a pretty diverse group of bikes here, mainy v-twin choppers, but there is a bit more variety this year than in the past. Hot Bike Speed and Style competition led to some incredible modern Harleys, while the invited builders and Show Class Peoples’ Champ brought vintage choppers ranging from Roland Sands’ RD400 to King Customs’ Shovester. And as usual, there is always plenty of crazy chopper people and amazing home builds around the show and parking lot to see. Check out some of the far-out rides here and stay tuned for the “Babes of Born Free 7” gallery tomorrow!
