2017 Moto Guzzi Audace Carbon, California Touring unveiled at the Intermot

The Audace Carbon is Moto Guzzi's take on doing a Diavel / VMAX-type muscle bike. The 200-section rear tyre looks the part, too, though 96bhp may not be nearly enough

According to Moto Guzzi, the new Audace Carbon – freshly unveiled at the Intermot in Cologne, Germany – is the one bike in their line-up that has the strongest and most rebellious character. It expresses 'dark soul,' they claim, and emphasies the sheer performance of its made-in-Mandello 1380cc transverse V-twin. Indeed, the Audace Carbon has no shiny bits of chrome anywhere – it's all dark black, with matt-red for the engine's cylinder heads and front brake caliers. And bits like the front mudguard and the sides of its fuel tank are actually made of carbonfibre.

'I believe that this bike, today, speaks louder than any words about the more modern soul and future of the brand from Mandello. Sitting astride this imposing bike, starting the powerful V twin and riding down the road is all you need to understand what Moto Guzzi represents today. Audace is a perfect interpretation of the most genuine Moto Guzzi spirit,' says Miguel Galluzzi, who heads the Piaggio Group's Advanced Design Center in Pasadena, California.

Changes on the new Audace Carbon, as compared to the older, regular Audace, include a Euro 4-compliant engine, platform footboards replaced with sportier footpegs, rocker gearshift control replaced with a classic gear shifter pedal, a lower, sportier seat unit upholstered in eco-leather, with exposed red stitching, reshaped handlebar (lowered and extended towards the rider), a new cruise control system and improved ergonomics overall.

2017 BMW K1600GT unveiled at the Intermot

The inline-six powered BMW K1600GT gets upgraded electronics, added refinement and new colours for 2017. And it remains one of the best touring motorcycle available on the planet

BMW have taken the wraps off the new K1600GT super-tourer, which gets a few updates for 2017. The bike;s 1600cc inline-six is now Euro 4-compliant, while output remains unchanged at 160 horsepower and 175Nm of torque.ESA electronic suspension with automatic damping adaptation is now standard, with road and dynamic modes, and is said to enhance both ride comfort and handling. In the 'road' mode, damping adaptation remains fully automated and is optimised for comfort and traction over all kinds of surfaces. 'Dynamic' mode is a bit more sport-oriented, tightening things up and optimising settings for high-speed handling and cornering. Electrically adjustable spring preload offers additional scope for customising the bike's behaviour, especially with a co-passenger on board.

The 2017 BMW K1600GT also gets a new 'reverse assist' system, which is activated via a button mounted on the left handlebar. This allows a rider to move the bike backwards more easily by providing power assistance while reversing, thereby doing away with the need to rely on muscle power alone. The new optional 'shift assistant pro' allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts, while the instrument cluster has also been redesigned for better readability. Lastly, parts of the bodywork and windscreen have been redesigned for better wind deflection and improved weather protection.

The new K1600GT comes with BMW's 'Intelligent Emergency Call' system as an optional extra, which can provide rapid assistance in the event of an accident or other emergency situation. If such a situation or an accident occurs, the intelligent emergency call is activated automatically or manually, sending the position data of the motorcycle and therefore the coordinates of the scene of the accident, setting the rescue chain in motion via a qualified BMW Call Center.

The 2017 Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT adventure bike is actually rather cool

While the all-new GSX-R1000R was Suzuki’s big ticket unveil at the Intermot this year, they have also shown the new, updated V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 650 (and their respective ‘XT’ variants) in Cologne. The V-Strom 1000, Suzuki’s flagship ‘adventure’ bike, gets revised styling and an all-new ‘Motion Track Brake System,’ which combines information from the machine’s inertial measurement unit (IMU) and wheel speed sensors to optimise brake pressure when the vehicle is leaned over, as well as in a straight line. The new cornering-ABS system also automatically applies pressure to the rear brake when front brake pressure rises to a certain level.The three-mode traction control system from the previous generation model remains unchanged.

The 2017 V-Strom 1000 also gets Suzuki’s easy-start system, which doesn’t require the clutch lever to be pulled in to start the bike, and needs just one push of the starter button for instant starts. Then, there’s the new windscreen, with height and angle adjustment to suit a larger cross-section of riders, while hand guards and engine cowling become standard equipment on both the V-Strom 1000 and the more off-road-oriented V-Strom 1000XT. And while the V-Strom 1000 gets 10-spoke, cast-aluminium wheels, the V-Strom 1000XT rides on wire-spoke wheels and DID rims that are more suited to off-road use.

The new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and 1000XT are both available in black, white and yellow, the last colour scheme being offered in homage to Suzuki’s DR range of Paris Dakar rally bikes from the 1990s. The “Champion Yellow” V-Strom 1000XT even gets gold anodised rims, the kind that are seen on Suzuki’s championship-winning motocross range.A vast range of accessories are available for both machines, with the V-Strom 1000’s integrated luggage updated with a new, larger capacity top-box. Other accessories include higher and lower seats, fog lamps and engine bars. Both bikes are expected to hit Suzuki showrooms early next year.

From 2017, KTM will take one more step forward with their 'ready to race' tagline. And this time, it will be with the big, bad boys of MotoGP. Designed and built in Austria, the KTM RC16 MotoGP bike will go head to head against Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Ducati and Aprilia next year, in the merciless world of MotoGP. And for this, KTM have built their first 1000cc V4-powered racebike, with a unique tubular steel trellis frame – the only one of its kind on the MotoGP grid. The KTM V4 produces more than 250bhp at 19,000rpm and features pneumatic valves, a seamless shift transmission, Akrapovič 4-in-2 titanium exhaust, Magneti Marelli ECU and full ride-by-wire throttle management, with traction control and quickshifter etc. With an aluminium swingarm and 1400mm wheelbase, the KTM RC16 is equipped with fully adjustable WP suspension, Brembo brakes, carbonfibre bodywork, 22-litre fuel tank and weighs 157 kilos.

"Sooner or later, some of the MotoGP innovations, that need to be kept confidential for now, will also find their way into series production. Guaranteed," says a press note from KTM. We can hardly wait.

2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure, 1090 Adventure unveiled at the Intermot

Between the new KTM 1290 Super Adventure/S/R and the 1050 Adventure/R, there's a KTM Adventure for everyone in there somewhere. Only, we'd rather take the 1290 Super Duke. Where's that?

For 2017, KTM are expanding their ‘Adventure’ range of bikes in a big way and have unveiled a host of adventurous machines at the Intermot – the 1290 Super Adventure (S, R and T versions), the 1090 Adventure and 1090 Adventure R.

First up, the new, off-road-oriented KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, which rides on 18-inch (rear) and 21-inch (front) wheels, and boasts a massive 160bhp and 140Nm from its 1300cc V-twin. With Continental Trail Attack II or ContinentalTKC 80 dual-purpose tyres, fully adjustable WP fork and shock, and electronics like lean-angle-sensitive ABS and stability control, the Super Adventure R is an unstoppable force and should be a hit with those who like to ride big, heavy (217kg dry weight!) and madly powerful motorcycles, off road. If you do, the bike’s 6.5-inch TFT display will provide all necessary information at a glance, and its new LED headlamps will light up the Sahara desert while you’re blasting across the sand dunes in the night.

On those long, hard off-road rides, you’ll appreciate the 1290 Super Adventure’s one-piece off-road seat, with its 3D foam cushions that provide long range comfort,yet with great seat of the pants ‘feel’ that riders crave. Crash bars, coated in orange to match the R’s steel tube trellis frame, and handguards round off the off-road package. Also, for those who’ll be happy with just 125bhp, there’s the slightly milder KTM 1090 Adventure R that you might want to take a quick look at.

2017 BMW S1000RR, S1000R, S1000XR unveiled at the Intermot

The 2017 BMW S1000RR gets updated electronics, while the S1000R and S1000XR get a bit more power and new colours. All engines are now Euro 4-compliant

BMW have unveiled their new, updated-for-2017 S series bikes, including the S1000RR, S1000R and S1000XR. Starting with S1000RR, the machine now gets a Euro 4-compliant engine, dynamic traction control (DTC) as standard fitment and ABS Pro as an optional extra. Single seat (with cover for the passenger seat) is now standard, while a ‘passenger package’ is offered as a free option. New colour schemes are available, which you can see in the pics above.

The BMW S1000R super-naked/streetfighter also now conforms to Euro 4 emissions norms, while power output has been increased from 160bhp to 165bhp. The S1000R loses 2kg and now weighs 205 kilos, while an HP titanium silencer is now standard and makes the bike sound better than ever before.The bike’s multifunction instrument cluster comes with improved readability and includes outdoor temperature display, while the fairing has been further trimmed down for improved aesthetics. Forged alloy wheels, 2.4kg lighter than the hoops used last year, are also now standard, while the list of optional extras includes ABS Pro, HP Shift Assistant Pro and Design Option wheels with red rim lines. New colour options are available, which you see in the pics on this page.

The new BMW S1000XR adventure sports-tourer also gets a Euro 4-compliant engine, with power output increased to 165bhp at 11,000rpm. Other new bits include vibration-free handlebars, an increase in payload by 10 kilos and new colours that you see here. Pricing and availability details coming soon.

Honda have unveiled the new Fireblade SP at the Intermot and as expected, the machine is lighter and more powerful than its predecessor and also gets a full suite of electronic rider aids. ‘All 1000cc sportsbikes are extraordinary examples of high performance engineering. But for us, for our new Fireblade, we want extraordinary to be the pleasure of handling and controlling such a machine. Its true purpose – wherever it’s ridden – is to enjoy something that is not normally experienced in everyday life, something that cannot be surpassed,’ says M. Sato, Large Project Leader for the 2017 Fireblade SP. ‘To go to next stage Total Control, we have added an electronic control system that is there to support the rider,’ he adds.

So, the new Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP gets an all-new 5-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which measures exactly what the machine is doing, in every plane. It works the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) traction control system, which manages rear wheel traction via the FI-ECU and ride-by-wire throttle. The new ABS (also managed by the IMU) offers rear lift control (RLC) and the ability for hard, safe trail braking into corners. Depending on settings, any difference measured between the front and rear wheel speeds also triggers the bike’s wheelie control system.

The new Fireblade SP’s electronics work in conjunction with its onboard Öhlins Objective Based Tuning Interface to adjust both the compression and rebound damping force of the bike’s semi-active Öhlins Electronic Control (S-EC) 43mm NIX30 front fork and TTX36 rear shock. For the rider this means access to a whole new level of handling ability. This system works just as well on the road as it does on the track and according to Honda, brings in a whole new standard in terms of superbike handling. And the Fireblade SP’s TFT LCD digital instrument display, which has three modes (Street, Circuit and Mechanic) provides all the information required by the rider for his specific usage and type of riding.

Horex unveils VR6 Heritage Line at the Intermot

Horex have unveiled their new VR6 HL (‘Heritage Line’), which is available in both single-seat and classic twin-seater versions. The bike supposedly pays homage to the late-1940s Horex Regina, though it’s hard to figure out a connect between that machine, which was powered by a 340cc single-cylinder engine, and the current Horex VR6, which is fitted with a 1218cc supercharged narrow-angle V6. Horex, now owned by 3C Carbon AG, plans to produce a limited number of their V6-engine bike, using high-spec components and ensuring very high standards of fit and finish. And indeed, the VR6 HL gets the obligatory Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes. There are also other variants of the VR6, including a cafe racer, and ‘classic,’ ‘black’ and ‘silver’ edition bikes.

The Horex VR6 HL’s V6 engine produces 168 horsepower and 138Nm of torque and the bike weighs 221 kilos, dry. The seat is upholstered in high-grade leather and there’s ABS, LED headlamp and taillamp, and Bosch ABS. Looks quite interesting to us and we hope to see more of this machine in the future.

Finally, an all-new 200bhp Suzuki GSX-R1000 with the latest in electronic rider aids

Ending many years of GSX-R1000 stagnation, Suzuki have, this year, unveiled not just one but two new big-bore Gixxers at the Intermot – the GSX-R1000 and the higher-spec GSX-R1000R, both of which feature new styling and colours, a new aluminium beam chassis, new swingarm and an all-new inline-four engine. For the first time, the GSX-R1000 also gets a host of electronic rider aids, including a three-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that works in tandem with ABS and a 10-mode traction control system.

The 2017 GSX0R1000's new 999.8cc inline-four produces 199 horsepower at 13,200rpm. The engine gets Suzuki's variable valve timing system (SR-VVT) and a new finger-follower valve train, which makes for strong low- and mid-range power delivery, while the VVT system boosts top end power. Suzuki’s SR-VVT is a compact and lightweight mechanical system that is built into the intake sprocket and is activated by centrifugal force, while the new finger-follower valve train is 6g lighter than a conventional bucket/tappet system, and allows the engine to rev higher and increases top-end power, with improved reliability.

For improved corner-carving prowess, the new Suzuki GSX-R1000 engine's cylinder block incline angle is moved back by 6 degrees, reducing the engine length by 22.2mm, the benefits of which are increased front-end feel and increased stability. Inside the engine there are new pistons, pins, rings, camshafts and titanium valves for higher peak power. And a brand-new electronics package, including a six-directional IMU, 10-mode traction control system and three-rider modes keep things mangeable even in tricky riding conditions.

For 2017, Yamaha have announced the MT-10 SP, which they say is the 'speed of darkness,' the most high-tech machine in Yamaha's 'hyper naked' range. With the 'SP' tag comes a bit of R1M-style bling, with the MT-10 SP getting Öhlins electronic racing suspension (ERS), which is controlled by a suspension control unit (SCU) that analyses data from a series of sensors, which monitor riding conditions in real time. The SCU constantly calculates the optimal compression and rebound damping settings and the system's stepping motors instantly make adjustments to achieve the optimal suspension set up for any given riding condition.

The MT-10 SP also gets full-colour, thin film transistor (TFT) instrumentation and a new silver-blue-carbon colour scheme, featuring blue wheels, black front fender, gold coloured forks and silver bodywork. Of course, there's a full complement of electronics, including an electronic quick shift system (that offers clutchless upshifts), multi-mode traction control and slipper clutch. With its lightweight, aluminium 'Deltabox' chassis and crossplane crank inline-four that produces 160 horsepower, the Yamaha MT-10 SP, with a dry weight of 190 kilos, offers a streetfighter riding experience that no other Japanese production machine can. The bike will be in showrooms by February 2017.
