Vespa Scooters Retain Over 72 Percent of Their Value After 3 Years of Ownership

The Scooters Retain Their Value Better Than Anything Else

Can you think of a vehicle that would retain 72.1 percent of its value over three years of ownership? According to data from J.D. Power and Associates, Vespa scooters do just that.

This year was the first year that J.D. Power tracked resale value and published a study on its findings. The published study was only on cars, but The New York Times reported that data in the study extended to two-wheeled vehicles, too. The brand sitting at the top of the heap was Vespa, which is owned by Piaggio Group.

Vespa’s 72.1 percent retained value wasn’t just a little better than other vehicle manufacturers, it outpaced them considerably. For comparison, the average value retention for four-wheeled vehicles rests at 55.7 percent.

The New York Times noted Vespas hold their value better than any other vehicle you can buy today, whether it has four wheels or two.

What Vespas Retain Their Value the Best?

When it comes to individual scooter models to pay attention to from a value retainment standpoint, look to the Sprint 150 and the GTS 300. Both of those bikes retain 79 percent of their value after a three-year period.

There are a lot of factors that influence value retention. The New York Times points to the fact that the scooter company is one of the only premium players in the scooter market.

Sure, you can buy a lower-priced high-quality scooter from Honda, Yamaha, Genuine Scooter Co., or just about any other major manufacturer. You can also buy lower quality and much cheaper scooters from numerous Chinese manufacturers, but none of those brands have Vespa’s brand cachet.

Vespa is a luxury marque, and its prices reflect that. The scooter company attracts a particular part of the market. The brand has been the first that people think of when they think scooters since the 1950s. Pair that with a stylish, classic design and Piaggio’s reputation for reliability, and it makes sense why the scooters retain their value so well.

The Vespa name is almost as much an Italian luxury iconic fashion brand as Versace, Prada, Gucci, or Fendi. Heck, half of those brands use Vespa scooters in their advertisements. When you take all that into account, it becomes clear why the company’s products retain their value so well.

Vespa Scooters Re-imagined

What happens when a scooter designer dreams? After all, one scooter from year to year doesn’t change much, but suppose one night, the designers, maybe after a night out, head back to the office, lock the doors on their studio and let the ideas flow. Who knows what might happen, you might get something like […]

The Honda X-ADV, a scooter that wants to be a dirtbike. With its 750cc engine and high-tech DCT, it should also provide large doses of fun on the street though

Honda recently unveiled the production-spec X-ADV, a machine that doesn't know whether it's a scooter or an adventure-touring motorcycle but looks pretty good all the same. Designed at Honda's R&D centre in Rome, the Honda X-ADV is powered by a liquid-cooled SOHC 8-valve 745cc parallel-twin that produces 54bhp and 68Nm of torque, while delivery 28kpl in terms of fuel efficiency. The engine is mated to a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT), which also has a 'Sports' mode.

"We wanted to create a motorcycle that comes with an adventurous spirit as standard fitment. We also knew we needed the X-ADV to be truly usable as a tool to move around the city, and be full of utility and user-friendly features. And come the weekend it can be used to escape all of the daily routine," says Kenichi Misaki, Large Project Leader for the Honda X-ADV. And indeed, the scooter features useful bits like 21-litre underseat storage (that can take a full-face helmet), 5-way adjustable windscreen, all-LED lighting, CRF450 Rally-style instrument display, a 'smart' key for daily convenience and even a centrestand. The bike rides on 17-inch (front) and 15-inch (rear) wire-spoked wheels shod with 120/70 and 160/60 rubber, and given its dual-purpose intent, the X-ADV comes fitted with Africa Twin-style plastic hand guards and an aluminium bash plate that guards the machine's underbelly.

The X-ADV gets a tubular steel chassis and has a wheelbase of 1590mm, 162mm of ground clearance and 820mm seat height. Wet weight is 238kg. Suspension comprises of a 41mm cartridge-type inverted fork up front, which is adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping, and a preload-adjustable Pro-Link rear shock that operates an aluminium swingarm. Twin 310mm brake discs at front, with 4-piston radial-mount calipers, provide stopping power and ABS is standard. The DCT can also be operated in manual mode and 3-level sports mode optimises performance for even the most demanding of riders. With its 13.1-litre fuel tank, the X-ADV has a range of about 300km. This adventure scooter will be in Honda showrooms early next year and pricing will be announced closer to the launch.

The Yamaha 04GEN is the coolest scooter we’ve seen in a long time

Last week, Yamaha unveiled the new 04GEN concept scooter at the 2016 Vietnam Motorcycle Show, in Ho Chi Minh City. According to Yamaha, this concept scooter “evokes the image of women with an air of dignified elegance and grace in mind and body.’ Er, yeah, sure. We also think it looks good. Compared to regular scooters, where body panels hide the engine and chassis almost completely, the Yamaha 04GEN used semi-transparent panels which only partially cover the bike’s internals, showcasing its beautifully-engineered structure. We also like it’s plush brown leather seat and smartphone instrumentation. Yamaha have positioned design as a central pillar for all future product development and if they really do launch an actual production scooter based on the 04GEN, it’ll definitely give the Vespa 946 something to think about.

BMW eRR concept showcases the German co's electric ambition

The BMW eRR battery-powered electric superbike concept shows what the S1000RR might become someday…

Today, the 200bhp BMW S1000RR is pretty much on top of the litre-class superbikes heap, but what about tomorrow? Or rather, what about a couple of years down the line, when fossil-fuel-power might be ready to give way to battery power? For that, BMW have the eRR, a concept bike created in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich. The eRR showcases the idea of an all-electric, battery-powered supersports BMW bike, which just might become reality in the years to come.

Stephan Schaller, Head of BMW Motorrad, says that in terms of acceleration from a standing start to about 50-60kph, the battery-powered BMW C evolution scooter can actually beat the 200bhp BMW S1000RR superbike. “We asked ourselves, what happens when combining a sport motorcycle and an electric drive? The experimental vehicle eRR brings zero emissions and electric drive on a new, more fascinating level,” says Schaller.

That’s all the detail that’s available for now – BMW say that they will reveal the eRR’s specs and technical details at a later date – probably at EICMA, we think. Stay tuned.
