The Honda CB1100TR concept, the most stunningly good looking motorcycle shown at the EICMA this year!

Honda recently unveiled the very cool CB1100TR concept at the EICMA, in Milan. The bike is inspired by American flat track racing and was designed by Honda engineers based in Rome. There's also a reference to MotoGP here – the number 58 on the bike is in the late Marco Simoncelli's honour, who passed away five years ago during a racing accident at Sepang, during the Malaysian GP. The CB1100TR is powered by an 1100cc inline-four and is fitted with a bunch of top-spec components – Ohlins fork and shock, Brembo brakes, Marchesini 17-inch forged alloy wheels (shod with Pirelli racing slicks) and Termignoni exhaust. The red, white and blue paintjob is just stunning.

Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 Aero, Vitpilen 701 concepts shown at EICMA

The Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 Aero concept is simply stunning…!

Along with their two new production-ready bikes, Husqvarna have also unveiled two new concept bikes at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan. First up is the Vitpilen 401 Aero, which is Husqvarna’s interpretation of how a modern faired sportsbike should look like. While it shares its chassis and engine with the production-spec Vitpilen 401, the Aero also gets an aerodynamic fairing, which gives it oodles of café racer style. Its silver/black paintjob looks terrific and the riding position is sportier and more committed than what you’d find on the production Vitpilen 401.

“There’s always been a fascination for faired bikes and for the guys it’s been a real pioneering approach to add fairings to a naked bike to experience aerodynamics and so on, and that’s the approach we took with the Aero. Not in a scientific way, really looking for performance, but more the emotional way to suggest as if the wind or airflow would have sculpted the fairing of the bike,” says Maxime Thouvenin, Creative Lead – Transportation Design, Husqvarna. “More than in a naked bike, on the Aero you sit inside the machine and not on it anymore, and it creates a very different riding experience, as well as a very different visual impact not just from the outside, but also from the inside,” he adds.

Vision Next 100 showcases BMW’s plans for tomorrow’s motorcycle

The Vision Next 100 is BMW's all-electric, always-connected, self-balancing motorcycle of the future. We expect its features to start trickling down to BMW production bikes within the next few years

BMW’s ‘Vision’ series of vehicles are aimed at fulfilling future mobility needs and may make it to production at some time over the next three decades. And after BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce Vision vehicles, there’s now also a Vision motorcycle – the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100, which was unveiled yesterday at the ‘Iconic Impulses – the BMW Group Future Experience’ event in Los Angeles.

The motorcycle, which looks rather outlandish today (but may not be all that surreal in 10-20 years from now…?) represents BMW’s vision for motorcycling in an always connected, always online world. “Motorcycling is about escaping from the everyday. The moment you straddle your bike, you are absolutely free. Your bike is ‘The Great Escape,’” says Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad. And with the Vision Next 100, BMW’s aim is to free the rider from as many constraints as possible, even doing away with the need to wear a helmet and protective gear.

With the Vision Next 100, BMW want to produce a machine that’s still recognizably a BMW motorcycle, hence the black frame (a reference to the first ever BMW R32 motorcycle, which was made in 1923) and the Boxer opposed-twin design cues. But, of course, there will be no actual Boxer-twin internal combustion engine here – that will be replaced with a zero-emissions electric motor, fed by lithium-ion batteries. The absence of a full fairing is explained by BMW, who claim that “clever arrangement of surfaces protects the rider from wind and weather as effectively as a full fairing. The surface of the frame is covered in matt black textile, its silky sheen and fine lines highlighting the characteristic forms and representing a contemporary reinterpretation of this classic BMW detail.”

The Yamaha 04GEN is the coolest scooter we’ve seen in a long time

Last week, Yamaha unveiled the new 04GEN concept scooter at the 2016 Vietnam Motorcycle Show, in Ho Chi Minh City. According to Yamaha, this concept scooter “evokes the image of women with an air of dignified elegance and grace in mind and body.’ Er, yeah, sure. We also think it looks good. Compared to regular scooters, where body panels hide the engine and chassis almost completely, the Yamaha 04GEN used semi-transparent panels which only partially cover the bike’s internals, showcasing its beautifully-engineered structure. We also like it’s plush brown leather seat and smartphone instrumentation. Yamaha have positioned design as a central pillar for all future product development and if they really do launch an actual production scooter based on the 04GEN, it’ll definitely give the Vespa 946 something to think about.

Victory Motorcycles Unveils Zach Ness Concept Bike

On the eve of last weekend’s New York City International Motorcycle Show, a motley group of gearheads and moto-enthusiasts gathered at Union Garage, a motorcycle and gear shop on an unassuming street in the industrial Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Sixpoint beer and Stillhouse whisky flowed, rock n’ roll and belly laughs echoed from the rafters, and bro-hugs were in no short supply among the assembled. But when the wraps came off the final installment in Victory Motorcycles’ 1200cc concept series, every neck in the room craned toward the podium to check out Zach Ness’ phenomenal “Combustion” concept motorcycle.

Best described as a power cruiser, the bike is wrapped in pewter paint with gold trim, with black spoked wheels and high bronze sidepipes befitting a Scrambler. Flashbulbs popped when Zach, son of Cory and grandson of Arlen, fired up the bike. Whoops and applause could barely be heard as Zach gunned the motor, its monstrous peal reverberating throughout the warehouse. The motorcycle is powered by a production-intended 1200cc, liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-Twin that will be featured in a new Victory model to be revealed next year.

“Our family has a long-standing relationship with Victory Motorcycles customizing many Victory production bikes in the past,” Zach said. “It’s always fun to look into the future – so to have the trust of Victory to create a more conceptual bike has been great. Also, as one of the first to ride this new engine, it absolutely RIPS!”

“Combustion” follows the recent reveal of another concept bike built by Urs Erbacher of Switzerland at EICMA in Milan, Italy. His bike, known as “Ignition,” took the very first pre-production 1200cc engine and wrapped it in an aggressive sportbike inspired stance intended to appeal to European riders. The first bike in the concept series was Roland Sands’ “Project 156” racer that made the podium at the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb earlier this year. Both Urs and Roland were in attendance at the reveal in Brooklyn, along with Cory Ness and numerous luminaries of the industry and Victory designer Mike Song, designer of the new model.

Look for the new Victory model powered by this 1200cc engine in 2016, and for more information on current models, check VictoryMotorcycles.com

BMW eRR concept showcases the German co's electric ambition

The BMW eRR battery-powered electric superbike concept shows what the S1000RR might become someday…

Today, the 200bhp BMW S1000RR is pretty much on top of the litre-class superbikes heap, but what about tomorrow? Or rather, what about a couple of years down the line, when fossil-fuel-power might be ready to give way to battery power? For that, BMW have the eRR, a concept bike created in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich. The eRR showcases the idea of an all-electric, battery-powered supersports BMW bike, which just might become reality in the years to come.

Stephan Schaller, Head of BMW Motorrad, says that in terms of acceleration from a standing start to about 50-60kph, the battery-powered BMW C evolution scooter can actually beat the 200bhp BMW S1000RR superbike. “We asked ourselves, what happens when combining a sport motorcycle and an electric drive? The experimental vehicle eRR brings zero emissions and electric drive on a new, more fascinating level,” says Schaller.

That’s all the detail that’s available for now – BMW say that they will reveal the eRR’s specs and technical details at a later date – probably at EICMA, we think. Stay tuned.

BMW Concept 101 is a beautifully built K1600GT-based bagger

Beautifully finished, with a special paintjob, wood, aluminium and carbonfibre trim and that 1600cc six-cylinder engine, the BMW Concept 101 is a rolling piece of art

Back in 2012, Honda had unveiled the F6B bagger, a stripped-out version of their Gold Wing luxe-tourer. And now, BMW have gone down the same road with the Concept 101, a K1600GT-based 'bagger.' Unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, the BMW Concept 101 is powered by BMW's 1649cc inline-six and was built by BMW Motorrad engineers, in collaboration with Roland Sands Design, in Los Angeles. The name 'Concept 101' comes from the bike's engine capacity – 1649cc is approximately equivalent to 101 cubic inches.

'The Concept 101 is BMW Motorrad's interpretation of endless highways and the dream of freedom and independence – the perfect embodiment of American touring. To me, the Concept 101 is the epitome of elegance, power and luxury on two wheels,' says Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design. We wanted to build a high-performance, emotional and highly exclusive 6-cylinder motorcycle that would make every ride a special experience. A bike that would make the moment so special, you would forget your destination,' adds Ola Stenegard, Head of Vehicle Design BMW Motorrad.

Long, low and cool, the BMW Concept 101 features a customised paintjob, brushed aluminium, carbonfibre and polished wood inserts on the bodyword, leather seat, modified fairing and windscreen and dozens of other custom-built bits and bobs. Looks rather good, we have to say. Now let's see if BMW will actually put this thing into production.

Like other concept bikes unveiled by Husqvarna at the EICMA in recent years, the new 401 Vitpilen and 401 Svartpilen look quite cool…

Husqvarna have this great tradition of showing one or two great looking concept bikes at the EICMA, and that tradition continued this year, with the 401 Vitpilen, 401 Svartpilen and 701 Supermoto.

The Husqvarna 401 Vitpilen (Swedish for ‘White Arrow’) draws on the DNA of the 1953 Silverpilen. 'A modern interpretation of the functional simplicity of the classic Silverpilen, the 401 Vitpilen combines contemporary technology, cutting-edge design and high quality hardware to deliver an uncompromised, genuine riding experience for the street,' says a press note from Husqvarna.

The Husqvarna 401 Svartpilen (Swedish for ‘Black Arrow’) concept is, according to the Swedish company, "A golden-age inspired modern streetbike that draws its design ethos from past iconic Husqvarnas. Reduced to the bare functional essentials, it’s free of gimmicks, gadgets and extravagant design embellishments. It ensures a riding experience that honours the simple idea behind early, pioneering Husqvarnas."

Both the 401s are powered by a lightweight and powerful single-cylinder four-stroke engine that's mounted in a compact chassis. "They bring back the honest and pioneering spirit of pure motorcycle riding from the good old days into our modern times," claim Husqvarna.

While the 401s are concept bikes, the 701 Supermoto is production ready and, according to Husqvarna, features "the finest craftsmanship and unparalleled single cylinder performance." The 701 gets bits like ride-by-wire throttle control and engine management, as well as high-spec WP suspension, dedicated supermoto ABS and APTC slipper clutch. With 67bhp from its single-pot engine, and a kerb weight of 145 kilos, the 701 should be great fun to ride.
