Yes, you can turn the Victory Octane into a flat tracker

Canadian builder Sam Guertin turns the Victory Octane into a flat tracker
There’s a lot of truth in the phrase “You make your own luck.” And that’s the subtext of the story behind this striking-looking Victory Octane, built by Samuel Guertin of Montréal-based Clockwork Motorcycles.

Guertin’s star is on the rise, thanks to a stream of quality builds that capture the zeitgeist of the current custom scene. And then he found himself in the right place at the right time—which happened to be his local Polaris dealer, Mathias Marine Sports.

“It all started one ordinary day when I went to the dealer to buy some OEM Kawasaki parts,” Sam tells us, “and some people realized that I was ‘the guy from Clockwork.’

“I ended up at the back of the store sitting on a brand new Victory Octane, with the key in my hand and an interesting proposition on the table.”

Mathias Marine Sports asked Sam to build a custom Octane, for their entry into Victory’s ‘Operation Octane’ competition. Even better, they told him to do whatever he liked.

Like most of us, Sam had never seen a Victory up close before this moment. Let alone thought about customizing one. “To be honest, I didn’t really know what I was going to do with it at first.”

He started by removing the parts he didn’t want: the bodywork, the seat, the front end, the wheels, the exhaust system, and anything else made of plastic. “But I kept the tank, mainly because I was on a pretty tight time frame, and would just have to deal with its lines.”

Sam is not a fan of bikes built just for the show, and didn’t want his Victory Octane to end up finishing its days on a showroom floor. He wanted it to have a purpose—on the racetrack.

Flat track racing is one of Sam’s passions: He helped to set up the Fooligan Derby in Saint-Marcel-de-Richelieu, and headed south across the border for Portland’s Super Hooligan class and the Flat Out Friday in Milwaukee.

Mathias Marine Sports liked the idea, so Sam started by cutting the rear section of the frame and fabricating a new tail unit out of steel, designed to match the lines of the tank.

“I was happy with the final shape, but since it’s a race bike, it was too heavy.” So painter Jean-Philippe Huet made a cast of the tail section and reproduced it in fiberglass.

“It was about quarter of the weight, and if the bike crashes on the track—which will probably happen one day—we can easily make a new one using the mold.”

Next up was a seat inspired by the vintage Harley XR750 flat tracker, upholstered by Montréal mastermind Rod Alves.

The standard Victory Octane front end is obviously not ideal for flat track racing, so Sam has installed motocross-spec inverted forks from a Kawasaki KX250, lowered about five inches and revalved. The back end now has custom-made longer shocks (which were not ready in time for the photo shoot).

Sam knew he needed 19-inch front and rear wheels to fit sticky Maxxis DTR-1 rubber, so he’s chosen a set of lightweight aluminum Excel rims. The front is laced to a now-brakeless KX250 hub.

The rear hub was a little trickier to sort out. “The original mag wheel had a cush drive pulley system, so I started from scratch using a Harley softail hub and a bolted style pulley, which I modified to fit the swingarm and axle.”

The rest of the drivetrain was easier to handle. The Victory Octane is powered by an 1,179cc V-twin engine, similar to the Indian Scout powerplant, and pumping out a solid 104 horses.

“It was already up to the task, but I wanted to give it a bit more braaap. So I got out the TIG and fabricated a new exhaust system to help it breathe better.

Inspired by vintage racing, Sam decided to coat the pipes with a high temperature ceramic flat paint—as seen on the manifolds of F1 cars from the 60s. Victory supplied an upgraded intake box, and there’s also a little remapping to make sure everything works well together.

All that was left was the paint. Sam put a call into graphic designer Raff Labrie of Les Loups Moto Company, and soon had some cool graphics and logos in his inbox. Then Jean-Philippe Huet laid down the signal yellow paint, taken from a vintage Porsche 911 pallete. It looks perfect.

The Octane is now being tested on the track, to get it fettled in time for its race debut—which will be at the Flat Out Friday in Milwaukee, during the Mama Tried Show.

If Sam is nervous at the thought of his baby hitting the deck or blowing up, he doesn’t show it. He’s planning to enter several races during summer 2017, including his local Fooligan Derby.

“Can’t wait to see this beast sideways!” he says.

Adjusting the Suspension on a Victory Bagger

Adjusting the suspension on a larger touring bike can be quick and easy but will make a huge difference in the ride of the bike. On the 2016 Victory Magnum X-1 and many other Victory bagger models, it’s as easy as popping off the side cover, grabbing the hand pump out of one of the saddlebags, checking the appropriate PSI on the lid of the right bag, and then pumping it up to that appropriate level. This can make sure that you have a firm but comfortable ride, without any wiggle when hitting turns at higher speeds.

Victory Motorcycles

‘Grizzly’ Urs Pedraita on his Victory Cross Country

Grizzly (real name Urs Pedraita) plans to roll out of Daytona’s packed and bustling main street at 1pm on Friday 11th of March 2016.
True to his name, Grizzly has been bear-like in his preparations to ride a Victory Cross Country around the world through all six continents in under 100 days (the record currently stands at 120 days). His aim is to ride with a continuous speed with as few stops as possible and he even plans to put the wheels on the ground in Antarctica.

Over the past year Grizzly has put himself through challenging acclimatisation rides in sub-zero temperatures and he says he is now ready to flex some ‘Modern American Muscle’ on board his Victory Cross Country. While this powerful bagger might be more used to cruising on paved highways, Grizzly shows that this kind of bike can be ridden everywhere – even on ice, snow, sand, mud and gravel.

Additional items on his Victory Cross Country include navigation systems, a 33-litre fuel tank, a customised seat with back support and two LED headlights added on the front for better visibility during his long night rides.

This won’t be Grizzly’s first big ride on a Victory Cross Country – in 2013, he completed a 9,000 mile trip in just 37 days – during the winter.

The 100-day mark puts the date as Friday 20th May 2016 and he’ll need to finish by then to achieve his goal.

With his boundless energy, ability to survive on very little sleep and the ultra-reliable Victory Cross Country, we can count on Grizzly to add this attempt to his growing list of world distance riding records.

Owners of Victory Motorcycles are invited to join Grizzly for one lap of the Daytona 200 road course prior to the start of Grizzly’s record breaking attempt on Friday 11th March 2016.

Zach Ness Talks About Victory Octane

Zach Ness and his family are some of the biggest names in American motorcycling, so to hear him say that this engine is unlike any he has seen is pretty exciting. Especially considering his dad built a bagger with two 124″ top ends put together last year.

This engine looks absolutely insane. We love it. Yes, there has been a lot of hype about the performance and a lot of hints at New American Muscle being something other than a traditional looking cruiser, but whatever it is, we’re on the edge of our seats waiting for it.

Victory Motorcycles Unveils Zach Ness Concept Bike

On the eve of last weekend’s New York City International Motorcycle Show, a motley group of gearheads and moto-enthusiasts gathered at Union Garage, a motorcycle and gear shop on an unassuming street in the industrial Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Sixpoint beer and Stillhouse whisky flowed, rock n’ roll and belly laughs echoed from the rafters, and bro-hugs were in no short supply among the assembled. But when the wraps came off the final installment in Victory Motorcycles’ 1200cc concept series, every neck in the room craned toward the podium to check out Zach Ness’ phenomenal “Combustion” concept motorcycle.

Best described as a power cruiser, the bike is wrapped in pewter paint with gold trim, with black spoked wheels and high bronze sidepipes befitting a Scrambler. Flashbulbs popped when Zach, son of Cory and grandson of Arlen, fired up the bike. Whoops and applause could barely be heard as Zach gunned the motor, its monstrous peal reverberating throughout the warehouse. The motorcycle is powered by a production-intended 1200cc, liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-Twin that will be featured in a new Victory model to be revealed next year.

“Our family has a long-standing relationship with Victory Motorcycles customizing many Victory production bikes in the past,” Zach said. “It’s always fun to look into the future – so to have the trust of Victory to create a more conceptual bike has been great. Also, as one of the first to ride this new engine, it absolutely RIPS!”

“Combustion” follows the recent reveal of another concept bike built by Urs Erbacher of Switzerland at EICMA in Milan, Italy. His bike, known as “Ignition,” took the very first pre-production 1200cc engine and wrapped it in an aggressive sportbike inspired stance intended to appeal to European riders. The first bike in the concept series was Roland Sands’ “Project 156” racer that made the podium at the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb earlier this year. Both Urs and Roland were in attendance at the reveal in Brooklyn, along with Cory Ness and numerous luminaries of the industry and Victory designer Mike Song, designer of the new model.

Victory Motorcycles Unveils Production 156 Engine

Victory Motorcycles today revealed the production version of the engine that powered Project 156 up Pikes Peak this summer.

It further announced that this engine will power an upcoming 1200cc class motorcycle.

The engine has been designed to deliver the strongest power and performance in its class and was shown off in a concept motorcycle built by European builder Urs Erbacher.

Erbacher is well-known in the European custom motorcycle scene taking several top awards and gaining international attention.

Erbacher’s concept – dubbed the “Victory Ignition Concept” was custom built around the first pre-production engine off of the line in Osceola Wisconsin. The concept features an aggressive stance and frames the engine with a cast aluminum chassis, performance suspension and brakes with a Project 156-inspired paint scheme.

“I’m proud not only of this build, but what it represents for the future of the Victory Motorcycles brand,” says the Swiss builder. “Getting full reigns to wrap the new engine in an interesting bike is a real highlight in my career, and from what I can see any production bike utilising this powertrain will be a fantastic ride.”

“Project 156 is a purpose built racer that took our engine design to one of the most challenging races on the planet – it was a proving ground like no other that set the bar very high for our team,” says Victory Motorcycles General Manager Rod Krois.

“This engine platform will deliver on the promise of modern American muscle that is in the DNA of every current and future product we sell. Victory will continue to aggressively plot a new course for itself and where an American motorcycle brand can go.”

“Victory Motorcycle – from day one – has been a brand designed to deliver outstanding in-class-performance, reliability and handling,” says Steve Menneto, President of the Polaris Motorcycles Division. “Our new engine, Urs’ concept and news we’ll be sharing at the IMS in New York City will plot the direction not only of this fantastic new platform, but of this brand. We will continue to design and build the best motorcycles in every class we compete.”

The liquid-cooled four-valve engine has a 60-degree vee angle, utilising double overhead cams that promise to make class-leading power. Additional details of the engine will be revealed in the months to come.

For more information on the Ignition concept bike, visit www.victorymotorcycles.com

The display at EICMA, the international trade and consumer show, will be open for the public starting Thursday November 19, and continues through the weekend. The Polaris stand is located in Hall 13. For more information log on to www.eicma.it/en/.

Fans of American performance motorcycles are encouraged to keep an eye on Victory Motorcycles in the coming weeks for more new product and concept motorcycles announcements.
