Some bikes are begging to be transformed when you customize them. Begging to be altered in both form and function, but the Bolt, or XV950 as they call it across the pond, is an awesome looking and riding bike from stock. It isn’t trying too hard to be anything it isn’t. It’s just a simple, mid-ranged cruiser that looks great and is a bunch of fun to ride. It is for this reason that we love how much this bike maintains the spirit of the original bolt.

El Jabali by Maurer Motors in Switzerland was built for Yamaha’s Yard Built Dealer Built program, which pits the best dealership mechanics and fabricators against eachother to build these insane custom bikes.

The custom tail section and number plate give this bike a flat track vibe, but the stance stays pure cruiser with the low seat and stock sized spoke wheels. The brown imitation leather lends a hand in giving this bike that old-school cruiser feel, with an old XVS650 gas tank with the tachometer mounted in the middle. Custom exhaust pipes were fabricated and wrapped, clubman handlebars were put on, and all custom lights and blinkers were equipped.

You’re left with a custom cruiser that looks like it could have been factory built. Clean, classic custom. It is distinctly Yamaha, completely Bolt, and fully custom and unique.

Portuguese masters of the monocoque design (the body as one fluid piece) it roCkS!bikes are back for their third Yamaha Yard Built motorcycle, this one based off of the VMAX. The Portuguese duo from Oporto, Alexandre Santos and Osvaldo Coutinho, have been building beautiful custom machines as it roCkS!bikes since 2013, incorporating their trademark monocoque tank, seat and tail unit into each build.

For their latest Yard Built creation Osvaldo and Alex set out to give the VMAX an entirely new image, enhancing and exploiting its drag racing capabilities. As with all their builds, the ‘CS_07 Gasoline’ gets the trademark monocoque unit, although as the VMAX fuel tank is located under the seat, the unit features a false fuel tank. The unit is hand crafted from metal sheet and gives the bike a sleeker, slimmer and sportier profile with a retro style.

The drag racer influence is clear to see with the massive slick rear Mickey Thomson tyre and handmade stainless steel 4 -2 headers connecting to a custom free flow SC Project exhaust system with carbon silencers.

The CS_07 ‘Gasoline’ rides on custom made spoke wheels, 3.5×18 front with 120/70×18 Dunlop rubber and a 6.0×18 rear for the drag strip tyre. The stock tacho is kept but comes in a custom aluminium housing and the standard fuel tank is replaced with a beautiful custom aluminium unit with it roCkS!bikes motif. A metal hand crafted fairing ensures slippery aerodynamics for the ¼ mile and LSL footpeg adapters and clip-ons put the rider in the correct position. A Rizoma fuel cap and K&N air filter add some extra bling and Brembo brake and clutch master cylinders take it to the next level.

A host of Motogadget parts including handlebar grips, an m-switch and m-blaze turn signals ensure the custom work really stands out, and the handmade leather seat with it roCkS!bikes logo sets the standard.

The build was completed at the end of 2015, the last of the year to celebrate 30 years of the VMAX. To mark the milestone a classic paint job was used to finish the bike. Taken from the 70s, the white, black and yellow colour scheme is pure icon, celebrating not just 30 years of the VMAX, but also 60 years of Yamaha! The bike was airbrushed and then gloss varnished in house by the builders.

A bike that is instantly unique. Lines that aren’t reminiscent or any bike we’ve really seen, but it works. Thinking outside of the box and bringing something this far-out to the Yard Built table is the only way to stand out.

As winter closes in, the Yard Built platform makes another first-time collaboration on an exciting new build based on the Yamaha XV950. Young gun Swiss builder GS Mashin steps up to the plate to deliver a totally original interpretation of the popular Sports Heritage machine. The result, the Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ is a total transformation, bringing a whole new vision and style to the Yard Built lineup.

Founded three years ago by ‘Niners’ crew member Tom Mosimann, GS Mashin blends solid, hand craftsmanship with eye catching new design ideas. Working from a small garage in Bern, Tom works to deliver truly different bikes within functional and technical requirements, meaning everything he builds is fully roadworthy and not just eye candy.

The Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ is no exception, looking radically different from the standard XV950 it’s a truly custom machine that follows the Yard Built principles requiring no cutting or welding to the frame to realise the concept. Inspired by Gothic architecture, Tom worked to create a low, racy looking machine with big narrow wheels and clip-ons in a stand out colour scheme.

I love what Tom has created with the XV as his base,” stated Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Shun Miyazawa. “I’m really happy that despite going for a really radical look, he shares our principles that a custom machine needs to retain the most important function; rideability. He’s kept the soul of the XV950 and wrapped it in a really original look without any cutting or welding to the frame. What is perhaps also very impressive is that 95% of the work he does is completed with just a few tools, an angle grinder, a bag of sand and a hammer!”

The Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ fairing is handmade from 1.5mm steel sheet with the mounts cut from a stainless steel pipe. A small Bates floodlight sits inside the fairing with the two Highsider turn signals. The custom fuel tank is also hand crafted from 1.5mm steel with the upper edge made with a trimming press. The lower section is cut from the original XV950 fuel tank. One of the standout elements of the build has to be the super clean prototype rear suspension units built by K-Tech, based on their signature style Bullit units.

The hand crafted steel tail unit wraps around a Shin Yo rear light unit and the seat is again a hand made affair with leatherwork by Jose Rey Saddlery. The beautiful aluminium upper fork crown is machined by Asic Robotics and is super clean without the holes for the risers. The wheels are a work of art, the original hubs were used then 18inch back and 21inch front rims were added with new spokes, with ABS!

The final result stands out as another totally original build in the Yard Built line-up, putting GS Mashin firmly on the custom map.

Cruising Faster Sons fz-09 Other Motorcycle Blogs Roland Sands RSD Yamaha yard built

Roland Sands' "Faster Wasp"

Following in the footsteps of Shinya Kimura, Roland Sands has stepped up and collaborated with Yamaha to create an exciting new chapter in the ‘Faster Sons’ story. Taking everything cool and iconic from Yamaha’s Sport Heritage bike building philosophy and taking it to the next level with pure sports DNA running through its veins.

The ‘Faster Wasp’, is Californian custom builder Roland Sands’ fifth Yamaha collaboration, and is a thoroughbred concept with more than a hint of legend Kenny Roberts in its design.

A professional racer himself, Roland Sands embraced the ‘Faster Sons’ philosophy of classic timeless style blended with cutting edge Yamaha technology and added a third element, infusing Yamaha’s racing pedigree into the mix. The result is a machine with massive impact, paying tribute to Kenny Roberts’ iconic TZ750 in instantly recognisable yellow and black ‘bumblebee’ colour scheme with just as much bite. Taking Yamaha’s latest 850cc in-line 3-cylinder engine with a lightweight aluminium frame, the ‘Faster Wasp’ has a serious sting in its tail with powerful performance wrapped in a classic package.

“Faster Sons is a mind-set to respect what comes from the old days, pureness, quality materials and design simplicity, blended with cutting edge technology”, commented Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Shun Miyazawa. “Roland did a fantastic job with this build, respecting this philosophy in great detail. This has given us a huge confidence and, as with Shinya Kimura’s concept, has again confirmed our direction and bike building philosophy. We are working on future Faster Sons products and this concept is going to help us to accelerate bringing future products to the market.”

“I go way back with Yamaha,” said Roland Sands. “I used to race TZ250 race bikes and ride a lot of Yamaha dirt bikes off-road so I have a lot of history. When I see what the Yamaha brand has done and where they want to go I find it really inspiring. We’ve built quite a few bikes together already. The triple package is really lightweight and performs really well. It’s not a race bike but it brings that level of race performance into a consumer friendly bike, which is great because it brings the fun factor. For me, that’s a great platform to build a custom on, I feel a bike needs to be fun, so you can have a good time but have good performance as well. This Faster Sons concept we’ve worked together on, bringing my racing heritage together with Kenny Roberts, one of my heroes and smashing it together with the triple has made a fun project to work on and I’m really happy with the end result.” The concept build features numerous parts by Roland Sands Designs, including the hand-fabricated aluminum gas tank, tail section, intake scoops, radiator covers, front number plate & front fender. There’s also a prototype Clarity timing cover, prototype rearsets, rear brake reservoir and prototype case guards. The chain guard, timing plug, axle sliders and gas cap are also all prototype RSD items.

The ‘Faster Wasp’ rolls on RSD Morris forged aluminium wheels (17×3.5” front & 17×6.0” rear) wrapped in Dunlop Q3 tyres. The screaming triple sound track comes courtesy of Two Bros Racing stainless steel headers with an RSD Slant muffler. The power is transferred to the back wheel with Renthal sprockets and stopping power comes from RSD custom superbike front brake rotors, Performance Machine radial brake calipers, an RSD Radial brake master cylinder and Spiegler brake lines.

An RSD cable clutch perch and Barnett custom clutch cable keep the gears in check and RSD Nostalgia handlebar risers, Renthal FATbar handlebars and RSD Traction grips give the rider total control. An Öhlins front fork cartridge kit and Öhlins rear shock keep the ride tight and Samco cooling lines adds a race level touch of detail.

The stunning look of the ‘Faster Wasp’ is perfectly detailed with a custom leather seat by Bitchin Seat Co., that amazing yellow and black colour scheme by Airtrix and Cerakote by Specialized Coatings.

Roland Sands' Raw Yamaha FZ-09

Roland Sands has taken the invitation to become the second builder in Yamaha’s Faster Sons program. The first of which involved Shinya Kimura taking an FZ-07, and developing a custom based off of Shinya’s story and the heritage of the brand, which led to the XSR700 production model.

Moving from legend to legend, Roland Sands comes enters the ‘Faster Sons’ story with race heritage of his own. As a professional racer from 1994 to 2002, he has plenty to draw from and a great platform for the build.

Pushing the limits of the Yamaha FZ-09, both mechanically and aesthetically, the Roland Sands crew has set out to breath the passion that got them into motorcycling into this new machine.

As the guys at RSD put it:
“The Wasp was conceived while dreaming of the days past. Sunny days at the racetrack viewed from a child’s perspective, behind the fence, beyond the pit wall and racing action. We dreamed of getting out there, dragging our knee and going head to head with the best riders of the day. As history plays out, the tracks and the people have changed. But the desire to race, to compete and to have fun are still part of our dreams. Meeting our hero’s and perhaps lining up next to them drove the team at RSD to create our MT09[FZ-09 in the US]. Caught somewhere between an 80’s Superbike and a flat tracker the Wasp is ready to do battle. High Bars, Morris billet wheels, classic Bumble Bee paint and a nod to one of our all-time Hero’s Kenny Roberts.”

We can only hope that this will lead to a new XSR900, but for now we can only wait and speculate.

Yamaha Faster Sons: Chapter Two

Yamaha’s ‘Faster Sons’ is different from the Yard Built program. ‘Faster Sons’ is about drawing from Yamaha’s rich heritage and making full-performance motorcycles with state-of-the-art components, and then drawing from those builds to produce the most stylish and best performing production motorcycles on the market.

Kicking off back in June with Shinya Kimura’s XSR700, ‘Faster Sons’ looks to be involving only the best of the moto-customizing best. Recruiting Roland Sands as the second builder to tackle the sport heritage segment, Chapter Two is already vastly different but equally as impressive as Chapter One.

Enjoy the video above and stay tuned for more to come from Yamaha’s Yard Built program and ‘Faster Sons’.

Yard Built XSR700 by JVB-Moto

Yamaha’s Yard Built program has a way of taking the bikes that we don’t get imported over here to the US and shoving gorgeous custom versions of them into our faces. It started with the XJR1300 and has now carried on to the incredible new XSR700. We don’t mind seeing the awesome bikes, we will just keep complaining until they import the stock models to the US so that we can enjoy them as well.

Following the stunning concept ‘Faster Son’ created by Chabbott Engineering’s Shinya Kimura this summer to launch the XSR700, Germany’s JvB-moto is now the first custom builder to step up and deliver their take on the latest offering from the Sport Heritage range. The result, the ‘Super 7’ makes a bold statement, making it clear that the possibilities for customization and personalisation with the XSR700 are huge.

Without any cutting or welding to the frame, Jens worked to strip back the bike with the drive to expose the essence of the retro styled machine. The end result is a super clean motorcycle that reflects the lightweight, powerful and agile nature of the standard XSR700.

Many of the parts on the ‘Super 7’ were made in-house by JvB-moto and will be available shortly for XSR700 owners. These include the headlight, LED indicators and speedometer mounting which holds the Daytona speedo. The side covers and seat unit that give the bike its distinctive shape were all made by JvB-moto as well as the mounting for the Arrows exhaust. At the rear of the bike, the mudguard, taillight and number plate mounting are all made in-house as well as the front mudguard.

The ‘Super 7’ sits on Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa tyres for total grip with Öhlins shocks at the rear keeping everything under control. The front forks are stock items, modified for the custom build. Custom risers keep the LSL handlebars at the right height in front of the stunning fuel tank, normally anodized but now stripped to show the raw alloy There’s also a custom rear brake reservoir and polished regulator.

The stock footrests and mountings were modified and JvB-moto LED indicators set off the front end. To finish off the sides the engine covers and other small parts were sandblasted to give the finished effect.

Everything designed and built in-house by JvB-moto will be available shortly as bolt-on parts for the XSR700.

Yard Built XJR1300 by El Solitario

Yamaha’s Yard Built program has gone from strength to strength, showcasing an impressive line up of customized creations built in collaboration with the world’s best custom motorcycle builders. This summer Yamaha teamed up with Spanish customhouse El Solitario for the final XJR build of 2015, celebrating 25 years of the iconic street machine. The result is an awe-inspiring creation, a race inspired track monster that more than lives up to it’s name, ‘Big Bad Wolf’. The bike broke cover for the first time at the Glemseck 101 show in Germany in September, taking to the 1/8 mile race track to bring an end to the reign of the defending champions Lucky Cat Garage.

El Solitario’s ‘Big Bad Wolf’ wraps up a year of incredible XJR builds celebrating the bike’s anniversary, a year that includes creations from Danish builders the Wrenchmonkees with the ‘Skullmonkee’, Portuguese builders itroCkS!bikes with the ‘CS-06 Dissident’ and Dutch builder Numbnut Motorcycles retro endurance racer inspired ‘Botafogo N’.

Despite the complete transformation from street machine to pure race predator, El Solitario stayed true to the Yard Build ethos and created the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ with no cutting or welding to the frame of the standard bike. The build highlights just how far you can go with a little imagination and an XJR1300.

“We are really happy with the collaboration with El Solitario,” commented Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager Shun Miyazawa. “The timing was just right as we believe they were ready to push out in a new direction from their previous work and break new ground. We wanted to challenge them with the Yard Built project to show a different side to El Solitario and push them to see what they are capable of. The result is impressive! With no cutting or welding to the frame of the XJR they have proved that the bike continues to be an excellent base for customization, no matter what direction you choose to build in. We’ve seen a number of amazing builds this year, taking different looks on the XJR and this is again a new approach. The level of detail is fantastic, and we are proud of the collaboration, showing not just a new face for the XJR but also new ground for El Solitario.”

El Solitario’s David Loner agreed, “El Solitario is not familiar with 4 cylinder bikes so at first we couldn’t understand the challenge. For months we tried to answer the same question: How could we take it further? Ground Zero would be to ask the correct question. Asking what scared us the most, the answer was performance and technology! Both were unknown and expensive paths for us. Suddenly aversion turned into curiosity and we had our challenge.

We are motorcycle poets not engineers, so countless hours of research, and the love of our friends, made it possible to find the best partners in the world of fast bikes, and with their help, we developed one of the gnarliest muscle bikes ever to be seen in recent years.”

Key to the success of the project was the collaboration with Mauro Abbadini, from Classic Co. as technical director of the build, he brought with him the confidence and know how of a veteran racer and winner of many battles. Last but not least an army of racing industry experts, all keen to collaborate with El Solitario.

The end result, the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ AKA: BBW, has almost everything custom made with the exception of the frame, the tank, the handlebars and the rear light, reducing the wet weight to just 183kg.

The Motor was blueprinted and the heads were ported and flowed. The intake port flow was increased by 50%. Compression was raised from 9.7-1 (Stock) to 10.7-1. The combustion chambers were reshaped & the squish areas increased. The rods were reinforced with titanium bolts and the crankshaft was rebalanced. All the electronics and were removed and state of the art Lectron 42 Carburetors were added, developed specifically for the BBW by Lectron Fuel Systems on their flow bench to be plug & play on delivery. A Dynatek Programmable Ignition was installed. The work takes the power up to 148 BHP at the rear wheel.

Classic Co. then fabricated a carbon fibre tail section, motor air rams and the belly pan, as well as all the aluminum brackets for the needed modifications. UK based Dymag developed the carbon fibre wheels especially to fit not just BBW but also the stock XJR1300. Acke Rising from ISR in Sweden did a lot of machining sing the El Solitario designs to make custom triple trees, disc rotors and the incredible rear brake caliper bracket. ISR hand controls were added along with ISR front 6 piston calipers and rear 4 pistons caliper.

K-Tech Suspension collaborated with Novatech to develop the impressive front forks and the rear shocks and the screaming custom titanium exhaust was made by Asahina Racing in Japan, designed to fit not just the BBW but the stock XJR1300 also. Moto GP oil cooler supplier, Taleo Racing in Madrid created the custom semi circular oil cooler and EMD in France, machined in aluminum the prototype motor covers which will be available to buy from El Solitario for the stock XJR1300 in the foundry version.

A TWM custom gas cap sets off the tank and a stunning custom aluminum swing arm by Over Racing in Japan finishes the rear along with a set of their rearsets. The BBW was wired using the Motogadget M-Unit & uses the M-Lock for on/off. Corona supplied the super cool quick shifter and PIAA supplied the intense headlights.

The BBW stays stuck to the tarmac with Michelin street, slick and rain tyres to maximize the fun whatever the conditions. Last but by no means least the beautiful custom graphics and paint was the work of London artist Death Spray Custom.
