Some bikes are begging to be transformed when you customize them. Begging to be altered in both form and function, but the Bolt, or XV950 as they call it across the pond, is an awesome looking and riding bike from stock. It isn’t trying too hard to be anything it isn’t. It’s just a simple, mid-ranged cruiser that looks great and is a bunch of fun to ride. It is for this reason that we love how much this bike maintains the spirit of the original bolt.

El Jabali by Maurer Motors in Switzerland was built for Yamaha’s Yard Built Dealer Built program, which pits the best dealership mechanics and fabricators against eachother to build these insane custom bikes.

The custom tail section and number plate give this bike a flat track vibe, but the stance stays pure cruiser with the low seat and stock sized spoke wheels. The brown imitation leather lends a hand in giving this bike that old-school cruiser feel, with an old XVS650 gas tank with the tachometer mounted in the middle. Custom exhaust pipes were fabricated and wrapped, clubman handlebars were put on, and all custom lights and blinkers were equipped.

You’re left with a custom cruiser that looks like it could have been factory built. Clean, classic custom. It is distinctly Yamaha, completely Bolt, and fully custom and unique.

A bike that is instantly unique. Lines that aren’t reminiscent or any bike we’ve really seen, but it works. Thinking outside of the box and bringing something this far-out to the Yard Built table is the only way to stand out.

As winter closes in, the Yard Built platform makes another first-time collaboration on an exciting new build based on the Yamaha XV950. Young gun Swiss builder GS Mashin steps up to the plate to deliver a totally original interpretation of the popular Sports Heritage machine. The result, the Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ is a total transformation, bringing a whole new vision and style to the Yard Built lineup.

Founded three years ago by ‘Niners’ crew member Tom Mosimann, GS Mashin blends solid, hand craftsmanship with eye catching new design ideas. Working from a small garage in Bern, Tom works to deliver truly different bikes within functional and technical requirements, meaning everything he builds is fully roadworthy and not just eye candy.

The Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ is no exception, looking radically different from the standard XV950 it’s a truly custom machine that follows the Yard Built principles requiring no cutting or welding to the frame to realise the concept. Inspired by Gothic architecture, Tom worked to create a low, racy looking machine with big narrow wheels and clip-ons in a stand out colour scheme.

I love what Tom has created with the XV as his base,” stated Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Shun Miyazawa. “I’m really happy that despite going for a really radical look, he shares our principles that a custom machine needs to retain the most important function; rideability. He’s kept the soul of the XV950 and wrapped it in a really original look without any cutting or welding to the frame. What is perhaps also very impressive is that 95% of the work he does is completed with just a few tools, an angle grinder, a bag of sand and a hammer!”

The Yard Built XV950 ‘ULTRA’ fairing is handmade from 1.5mm steel sheet with the mounts cut from a stainless steel pipe. A small Bates floodlight sits inside the fairing with the two Highsider turn signals. The custom fuel tank is also hand crafted from 1.5mm steel with the upper edge made with a trimming press. The lower section is cut from the original XV950 fuel tank. One of the standout elements of the build has to be the super clean prototype rear suspension units built by K-Tech, based on their signature style Bullit units.

The hand crafted steel tail unit wraps around a Shin Yo rear light unit and the seat is again a hand made affair with leatherwork by Jose Rey Saddlery. The beautiful aluminium upper fork crown is machined by Asic Robotics and is super clean without the holes for the risers. The wheels are a work of art, the original hubs were used then 18inch back and 21inch front rims were added with new spokes, with ABS!

The final result stands out as another totally original build in the Yard Built line-up, putting GS Mashin firmly on the custom map.

Yamaha Yard Built Bolt: 'The Face'

A “Cafe Bob” is a concept that sounds quite hard to pull off. But looking at the stance of Dirk Oehlerking’s ‘The Face’ Yamaha Bolt XV950, it all makes sense. Kingston Custom in Denmark produces a wide range of custom bikes, all of which have a beautiful attention to detail and manage to capture some essence of the original bike while having that same unique style that Dirk is known for: a talent unique to great artists and builders.

The XV950 is riddled with personal touches and unique details that make this bike stand out. One of my personal favorites being the goggle shield used as a small wind screen above the headlight: a trait that carries through several of Kingston’s builds. While many parts of this bike were a completely new style for this shop, there are some things like the spark plug sticking out of the custom triple trees that might as well be a hand-written signature.

“We are really impressed with the result,” commented Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager Shun Miyazawa. “Dirk has taken the XV950 and shown that with no cutting or welding you can add a completely original look to the bike. What’s also very important for us is the fact that most of the custom parts developed and used for this build are available so anyone with an XV950 can create their own Kingston Customs ‘The Face’ look!”

To create the XV950 ‘The Face’, Dirk designed and built many parts in-house, including the cool, see-through ‘The Face’ style air filter cover and the custom hand stitched café racer seat. Kingston Custom designed and made parts also included the foot peg bracket, speedometer bracket, foot brake lever, gear-shift and unique MX visor screen.

A selection of quality aftermarket custom parts were also added, including LSL handlebars, Motogadget indicators, Highsider rear lights, LSL brake lines, Motogadget grips and genuine Yamaha YZ/WR footpegs. The XV stays connected to the ride with matching Shinko tyres with coloured sidewalls whilst Kingston Customs modified suspension and a Megaphon exhaust finishes off the look. The Yard Built is complete with a cool paint job sporting iconic Yamaha design.
