Speed and Strength: Cruise Missile Armored Hoodie

Speed & Strength Cruise Missile Armored Hoody

Dress for the slide, not the ride. Or in this case, you can dress for both. This lightweight, stylish sweatshirt is fully armoured with shoulder, elbow and back protectors. The sweatshirt is also equipped with zippered hand warming pockets, as well as belt snaps to keep the hoody from riding up in case of a slide. The pads are a bit large, which means you may look a little bit like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or one of the hyper-yoked dudes from Jersey Shore, but who says that’s a bad thing? Especially when you know you’re propper protected should any part of your ride go awry.

There are tons of brands bringing all shapes, colors and styles of moto jackets to the market, and finding the right one for you can be a challenge. Here are five of our favorite jackets that we have had the pleasure of reviewing over the past few months.

Pagnol M1 Jacket

Pagnol M1 Motorcycle Jacket

What do you do if you are a motorcycle enthusiast with a day job as a fashion designer, and you hate the way you look off the bike in motorcycle gear? You build your own line of fashion-first motorcycle apparel.

That’s what Paulo Rosas did with his new Pagnol line of motorcycle gear. A lifelong sportbike rider, Paulo started with his signature M1 jacket, which uses 1.2 mm-aged cowhide, complete with stretch accordion panels, key areas of perforated ventilation, and high-quality zippers and snaps. The jacket fits secure, snug, and contoured unlike many big, baggy motorcycle jackets which flap in the breeze and make you look like you are wearing a glamourous trash bag.

Off the bike the Pagnol M1 is sleek, stylish, and sophisticated. This is the type of jacket you’d see a celebrity wearing on a night out in Hollywood.

But that doesn’t mean it sacrifices safety and performance on the bike. With the optional armor slipped into its perfectly shaped padding pockets, this jacket protects with the best. The extended lower back hem, long sleeves that don’t ride up, and riding-position friendly arm shape, make the jacket secure and comfortable at speed and very safe if you end up sliding down the pavement.

If you are an urban rider that wants to go to a meeting or get a cup of coffee while wearing your motorcycle jacket, the Pagnol M1 will help you do so looking like you stepped off a fashion runway rather than a race podium. Paulo Rosas successfully merged his two worlds – to the benefit of motorcyclists.

The Pagnol M1 is $599 and available at www.pagnol-moto.com.

Crave Denim Motorcycle Jacket

Motorcycle jackets come in all shapes and sizes. One can find a riding jacket to fit just about any style, which gives the rider a full pass to be picky when it comes to who you give your money to. You want to make sure that the jacket fits your style, but is also made with high quality protective components in case things go wrong. And with the way modern protective fabrics have progressed, you shouldn’t have to look like Ironman to be covered.

The Crave Denim Jacket is constructed with an outer shell of high quality black denim, and lined ENTIRELY (not just the elbows and shoulders) in Dupont Kevlar. There are pockets in the elbow, back and shoulders for protectors if you want to put those in as well.

There is a zipper that runs the length of about a third of the sleeve and down the body to vent the armpits, which is a thing many stylish moto-brands leave out and is very much appreciated on this jacket. The collar, sleeves and pockets are kept in place with velcro closures so you don’t have to fiddle with buttons or straps while your riding. The fit is spot on as well: with the vents both open and close I have gotten none of the wind-flap that can come with some other casual jackets. Fitted with a small pocket on the bottom of the left sleeve and a slightly larger phone/ wallet pocket on the right shoulder, as well as the four pockets on the front of the jacket and one inside, this layer will leave you plenty of room to stash all your goodies.

This jacket has quickly become a go-to for all mild weather riding and won’t be going on the shelf any time soon.

Spidi Roadrunner Jacket and King Gloves

Simplicity in form and function. All that you need and nothing more.

These two pieces from Spidi are just that. Simple. And perfect.

The leather of this jacket will speak to you before you even take it off of the hanger. It oozes class. The stitching details in the shoulder and the elbow work with the CE certified level one armor to ensure that you don’t look too bulky and there is an optional sleeve for the Warrior back pad sewn into the back of the jacket. The only visible branding is the subtle “Spidi” up on the collar, which is a refreshing change from most motorcycle gear companies with close to this much race heritage. Complete with a handful of comfortably accessible pockets and a removable liner, the Roadrunner Jacket is as versatile as it is good looking.

The gloves are made of supple Italian leather that quickly adapts to fit your hand. The thickness and quality of the leather combined with the masterful construction of this glove leave you with a completely non-restrictive full leather glove with a padded palm and knuckles. The only branding is embossed over the back of the hand and very subtle in the black leather. The fit is adjusted with elastic in the wrist and one leather strap with a snap and two sizing options; beautifully simplistic.

We are very impressed by this set up from Spidi and look forward to the abuse that we will be dishing out while testing these beautiful products.
